ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses spirituality has been a marginalized topic in psychological research in sport, and until recently only a few journal articles. It explores the development of English language literature on spirituality in sport psychology, recognizing that the following review is highly partial and represents the Anglo-American perspective on this issue. A development that further facilitated the emergence of research on spirituality was the growth of cultural sport psychology and cultural praxis. The spiritual dimension in sport was first taken up in the context of mystical and transcendent experiences in sport. The first quantitative studies into spirituality in sport psychology emerged in the new millennium and explored the correlations between spirituality and "being in the zone", team cohesion and coping in sport. Starker provides a working model for sport psychology practitioners to develop awareness and competence to address spiritual and religious worldviews in their consultation work with athletes.
