ABSTRACT

The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) in a small healthcare system will typically be a part-time physician informaticist and have most of their time devoted to clinical work. Perusal of the CMIO job boards reveals that small organizations, even Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), are increasingly posting jobs for CMIOs. The leadership engagement of the C-suite, usually the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), is of paramount importance to the EHR adoption process in the small organization. The CMIO at a small organization needs to have the full backing of the C-suite to be successful—something that CMIOs in larger organizations take for granted. Since the CMIO in the small healthcare organization may be spread a little thin and have a significant clinical workload, this makes the team around them that much more important. Good Clinical IT personnel, ideally RNs, are an asset in any size organization.
