ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) to achieve success, while avoiding the obstacles, the American medical culture and the complexity of today's healthcare industry can put in people way. It describes some of the key characteristics and accomplishments that define the CMIO journey, point outs some of the "time-honored" pitfalls, and introduces the emerging trends that will shape the field in the years to come. Each CMIO needs to grasp and communicate the potential value of the change and required investment, and inspires colleagues, executives, and patients alike. The Triple Aim Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) can serve as the guidepost for planning the journey to high value healthcare as well as the role of health information technology (HIT) in the transformation. In the short term, each CMIO must set expectations with leadership and his/her colleagues regarding a long-term commitment to change and workflow redesign—as well as the value of information.
