ABSTRACT

Personal health records (PHR) offer tremendous promise for patient engagement, provider outreach, and operational efficiency. PHR implementations represent a significant change in workflows for providers, clinical operations staff, and patients. Patient adoption is essential to the realization of benefits of PHR implementations. One common strategy is to provide an access code to the patient that can be utilized to complete the enrollment process. Online enrollment into personal health record is an important method to promote patient adoption. Recognition of the work that providers perform to serve patients via the PHR is an important element of provider engagement. Marketing and communications are key partners in a PHR deployment. Marketing and communications professionals can assist in drafting key messages and talking points for all members of the organization to be able to share with colleagues and—more importantly—patients and their families.
