ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores approaches to working with diverse groups including women, ethnic minorities, and young people. It examines justifications for rehabilitative work and introduces readers to models of rehabilitation such as the RNR model, desistance models, and therapeutic justice approaches. The book focuses on policy developments by exploring the emergence and implementation of risk assessment policy, which is a key policy development in criminal justice systems across several Western and non-Western jurisdictions. It also focuses on frontline practice. The book also explores several dimensions of real-world rehabilitative work, from applying supervision skills and innovative interventions, to working with violent offenders, sex offenders, and victims. It also examines evidence-based rehabilitative approaches and emphasizes the importance of evaluating real-world practice to strengthen its evidence base.
