ABSTRACT

Improving professional practice of community supervision officers requires a coaching model that aims to improve officer use of skills and officer decision-making by putting officer experience at the heart of coaching efforts. This chapter situates the RNR model within the larger supervision context and argues for a form of coaching that goes beyond teaching specific RNR-related skills to help officers improve critical thinking and decision-making by working through the experiential learning cycle. The coaching model proposed here is based on Derek Milne’s evidence-based clinical supervision of cognitive behavioural therapists, which is itself rooted in David Kolb’s experiential learning theory. This chapter also lays out a research agenda for better understanding the effects of the proposed coaching model and importantly, includes a mechanism for continuous practitioner feedback.
