ABSTRACT

This chapter will provide a contemporary outline of risk assessment approaches, treatment, and management strategies available for working with violent offenders. First, the purpose of the risk assessment procedure and current best practice with regards to such approaches available to practitioners will be considered. Recent developments in the risk assessment field, namely the acknowledgement of the importance of protective factors associated with violence risk, will be illustrated. Recognizing that scientifically rigorous risk assessment is paramount in supporting the rehabilitative prospects of an offender, attention will then turn to effective violent treatment interventions through the exploration of essential components for offender behaviour programs. Finally, the chapter will conclude by examining contemporary practice in relation to the effective management of violent offenders, namely the use of surveillance and technology along with the importance of supervision and through-care/resettlement strategies.
