ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the needs of those who are incarcerated from a public health perspective, viewing prison and supervised release as an opportunity to address the underlying health problems that this group often experiences. A number of health problems that this group are at an increased risk of experiencing are discussed. These include mental illness, drug use, infectious disease, chronic disease, intellectual disability, and brain injury. This chapter aims to inform those working with supervisees as they are transition back into the community where health resources are most needed. The term community corrections officer (CCO) will be used throughout this chapter; this encompasses anyone supervising someone who is subject to orders of the court, including case workers, parole officers, and any other supervisors.
