ABSTRACT

Assessing someone’s capacity to make, revoke or change a will is somewhat different from other areas of mental capacity. Managing financial affairs is a vast topic taking in numerous decisions at various levels of difficulty. The Coins and Costs Test was developed to assess basic financial knowledge of people with mild intellectual disabilities. People often cannot consider the possibility that the person they would like to be their attorney could do anything against their best interests and so will say that there are no risks to that person managing their finances. While it is good that they trust the person whom they are asking to be their attorney, they also have to be aware of the small possibility that something might go wrong. The informant will need to be aware of the situation and what income and outgoings the person has on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
