ABSTRACT

The International African Institute (IAI), the International Congress of African Studies (CIAF) and the Universite Nationale du Zaire (UNAZA) held a joint seminar on "African Languages in Education: Langues et Education en Afrique", at N'Sele, near Kinshasa, between 13th and 15th December 1976. For the IAI, this was the fourteenth International African Seminar held since 1959 in conjunction with universities and research institutions in Africa. The initial planning for the seminar began in 1974, when the IAI strengthened its 50-year old commitment to the written development of African languages through the establishment of a separate Language and Education Unit, thanks to generous support from the Ford Foundation. The primary aim of the Seminar was to establish a forum for the wider continental exchange of experience, in the field of African languages in education, and for the examination of common problems, both practical and idealogical.
