ABSTRACT

The National Audit Office report on children in care reported that approximately 64,000 children were taken into care in 2014, mainly on the grounds of abuse and neglect. Each of these children has a parent who was deemed to have failed to care properly for them, and who is then identified as a risky carer for the future. In 17 per cent of cases, further proceedings removed another child; and there is evidence that a small sub-group of women repeatedly get pregnant and have children removed. The Berkshire Psychotherapy Service set up a therapy group to support women who had had a child removed, with a view to reduce the risk of further proceedings. This chapter describes the membership of the group, its work and some data on outcomes.
