ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of contemporary spirituality, wellbeing and spirituality in education, to enable a greater understanding of how spiritual wellbeing may or may not be nurtured in both religious and secular school contexts. It focuses on both international and local, in the case Australian examples, to illustrate the arguments. The chapter develops and presents one argument of the concept of spiritual wellbeing as an important, and indeed, integral element in human life, that should not be ignored or divorced from educational practices if educators aim to teach and nurture students in their wholeness. In Australia, discrimination, based on skin colour, ethnic origin or religion, remains a persistent and increasing problem up from 9 per cent in 2007 to 15 per cent in 2015. Narrow nationalistic movements such as Reclaim Australia, and the political party One Nation now also have a prominent voice in the public and political sphere.
