ABSTRACT
This chapter considers modern pet keeping, but its focus is not on formal debates in the animal studies community considering the rightness of keeping animals in private homes. Rather, it focuses on unpacking the dynamic, if not necessarily coherent, ethical discourse embedded within the practices, daily routines, and popular ideas about pets.
