ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the ethics of keeping nonhuman animals as “pets,” beginning with the basic question of whether it is ever morally acceptable to hold an animal captive for the sake of our own pleasure or entertainment. Current pet-keeping practices are morally untenable because they turn animals into emotional commodities and impose serious physical and emotional harms.
