ABSTRACT

Introduction: This contribution argues that zoos and aquariums (accredited or otherwise designated members of the professionally recognized zoological community) are uniquely poised to contribute to the successful conservation of species and ecosystems. It also outlines the One Plan Approach, which is a conservation planning framework that brings together experts from the global zoo and aquarium fraternity, local community representatives, government agencies, wildlife managers, conservation organizations, scientists, and others in developing conservation strategies to achieve the common goal of viable populations of species thriving in healthy ecosystems.
