ABSTRACT
Despite the fact that zoos have positioned themselves as centers of conservation and education where the public can learn about animals and their habitats, critics argue that evidence of educational impact is needed to justify keeping wildlife in captivity for public display. Here, I present the current evidence both for and against zoos’ claims about their educational outcomes and conclude with a discussion about alternatives to zoos as a means to learn about wildlife and environmental conservation.
