ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the presentations of the institution, its teachings and its practices on its web pages based on methods of hermeneutics and close reading of these pages. It focuses on research of Kapil Math's many book publications, field research and numerous visits to the Kapil Math's monastery in Madhupur. The Kapil Math represents an institutionalization of important nineteenth-century views on Yoga that promoted the ancient sage Kapila as the world’s first philosopher and as the founder of both philosophical systems Samkhya and Yoga and suggested that the teaching of the Buddha was based on Samkhya. In the case of Kapil Math, the Internet seems to be an extension of the written text of books and booklets rather than an expansion of the oral tradition. Modern Hinduism is a product of the printing press and the availability of the printed books, and so is the Samkhyayoga tradition of Kapil Math. The websites of religious institutions have become an additional source.
