ABSTRACT
For most of Jesus’ life, his ministry on the earth was marked with a sense of obscurity. The Gospels tell a story that after Jesus calming the storm in the presence of his disciples, they asked, “Who is this man? That even the winds and waves obey him!” (Matt 8:27). This chapter defines Christology from a historical perspective and then proceeds to outline a brief historical background on the study of Christology in Africa. It explores insights that have shaped the Christological discourse in Africa over the long history of Africa's encounter with Western Christianity. The chapter highlights some leading scholars in African Christology and various Church traditions. Some of the leading Christological scholars in Africa that are highlighted are Kwame Bediako, Charles Nyamiti, Anne Nasimiyu-Wasike, and Laurenti Magesa. The chapter looks at how Jesus is appropriated in contemporary African realities.
