ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the lack of transformation in post-apartheid South Africa and in the country’s universities, and the subsequent disruption and activism of students under #FeesMustFall in 2015. It shows why students organised and campaigned for fundamental change and how their resistance was aimed at both the university structures and the government, whom they blame for their failure to transform the public higher education system. It also discusses the differences between historically black and white institutions, student movement’s tactics and the responses of universities and authorities. It concludes by drawing a number of lessons from these events for the country and for a broader global community.
