After the war is over, the effects of deadly legacy weapons such as landmines, explosive remnants of war, and IEDs have various negative and long-lasting impacts on human populations and the environment. These effects include direct impacts on humans, direct impacts on the environment, and indirect impacts on the environment due to changes in human behavior as a direct result of the presence of legacy weapon contamination. Additionally, the process of removing from the soil and destroying weapons contamination can have long-term impacts on the environment. This chapter gives an overview of these issues as well as provides general information on available methods of mitigating the effect of legacy weapons on the environment.
