ABSTRACT

Shaped by the rapid expansion of the fossil-fueled global economy, industrial humanity is now changing how the earth system functions. These new circumstances, often discussed as a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene, require rethinking the old arguments that environmental scarcities cause conflict. Now, the most important matters are the disruptions caused by the growth of the global economy, and the need to make a new economy not dependent on fossil fuels and massive rural resource extractions. Environmental security now has to be thought about at the global scale to produce sensible policies for the future and ensure sustainability for all humanity in the next stage of the Anthropocene.
