ABSTRACT

Is attention to implicit bias a distraction from more pressing social and political concerns, or do implicit biases themselves reflect the ways in which broader social structures and patterns become “imprinted” in individuals’ minds? Instead of focusing solely on individuals, Chapter 11 examines the circumstances in which individuals make their decisions. What are the incentives, opportunities, limitations, and constraints that individuals face? When our explanations of social life have more to do with people’s contexts, circumstances, or situations, then we are focused more on social structures than on individuals’ beliefs, preferences, or choices.
