ABSTRACT

Unite For Sight works within the existing infrastructure of local eye clinics to provide quality care by local doctors to patients living in extreme poverty. It is only with Unite for Sight's direct support with human and financial resources that outreach programmes with phenomenal local doctors were able to employ novel strategies and innovations to reach patients in their villages. This chapter evaluates the number of patients living in poverty who are receiving Unite For Sight-sponsored surgery by the local eye clinics, and tracks number of patients with significantly improved vision after surgery. Unite For Sight requires extensive documentation from each eye clinic partner, including preoperative and postoperative visual acuity data that are analysed to ensure quality, effectiveness, and social impact of programmes. Unite For Sight emphasises the essentials of including eye care in global health priorities, while highlighting the importance of supporting and assisting local professionals in their own social ventures to eliminate disparities in their communities and countries.
