ABSTRACT

Since the inscription of the country’s first site in 1993, the number of World Heritage sites in Viet Nam has grown to eight – five Cultural, two Natural and one Mixed (Table 16.1). Covering a total of 280,000 hectares in the northern half of the country and are home to 1.2 million people, the sites are diverse in attributes, characteristics and management mechanisms. They are also a source of national pride and concrete evidence of the country’s engagement in international cooperation and globalization.
