ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter offers background on the common themes of this collective volume. It begins by defining the “European postwar avant-garde” under consideration, then reviews the traits of that milieu and the problems posed by its historiography before situating the methods and strategies of the contributors in relation to their previous experience in the fields of archival research and sketch studies. This is followed by an overview describing the individual contributions that points out common threads connecting different chapters.
