ABSTRACT

Although southern Tajikistan is often considered to have no other significant Hellenistic sites than the Oxus Temple, the land is actually rich in Hellenistic sites, which are, however, mostly deeply buried by later levels. This study is based on a thorough review of scholarly literature, mostly published in Russian, museum collections and on the author’s own fieldwork. It presents the main finds and sites, such as the Oxus Treasure, Takht-i Sangin with the Oxus Temple and Torbulok. In addition, it gives a comprehensive overview of all the Hellenistic data and sites in the area, which are arranged according to their respective river oases. It thus provides insight into the settlement structure of southern Tajikistan in the Hellenistic period.
