ABSTRACT

The Achaemenid background of Arachosia is summarised, then the archaeological evidence reviewed in detail. The main discussion focuses on the site of Kandahar, the main urban site in the region for the period, where the evidence is reviewed in detail, particularly the evidence of Greek inscriptions. This is followed by a summary of sites where Hellenistic material has been recorded elsewhere in Arachosia, as well as in Drangiana and Areia, emphasising the complete absence in the latter. Finally, the inconclusive nature of Greek identity is discussed, despite the evidence of the inscriptions.
