ABSTRACT

This chapter is dedicated to the Buddhist dialogue Milindapañha and its main character – the Indo-Greek ruler Menander. It examines the historicity of the dialogue on the basis of other Indian sources on Menander, such as archaeological finds (the Bajaur reliquary inscription of Menander, the Reh inscription and Menander’s coinage) and literary works (Yuga Purāṇa and Bodhisattvāvadānakalpalata). The analysis of these sources leads to the main conclusion that there were probably two different Indo-Greek rulers named Menander and that the main character of the dialogue should be identified with Menander II Dikaios.
