ABSTRACT
Moving beyond a purely literary exploration of South Asia, this chapter takes a critical look at a broad range of sources including archaeological, sculptural and numismatic evidence, as well as religious texts that have traditionally been associated with the Mauryan period. The key problems associated with dating this material are clearly outlined in order to show that many objects widely considered to be ‘Mauryan’ are often impossible to date, making such a link impossible.
