ABSTRACT

AutoTutor, an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) has increasingly attracted researchers’ attention because it promotes deep learning through individualized and adaptive scaffolding in real time. CSAL AutoTutor is a trialog-based ITS (a human learner, a teacher agent, and a student agent) that is used to guide adults who have low literacy skills towards improved reading comprehension. This chapter concentrates on summarization which is one of the strategies that CSAL AutoTutor uses to help adult learners. The first section describes the theoretical framework of reading comprehension, followed by a section on summarization strategies that are aligned with deep reading levels. The third section introduces advanced technologies including the design of the interface, conversations, and adaptive tasks.
