ABSTRACT
Reference to security and intelligence in education today will undoubtedly elicit concerns over terrorism, radicalisation and, in the UK, counter-terrorism measures such as Channel and Prevent, pan-European counter-terrorism initiatives, and in the United States the emergence of the Department for Homeland Security as well as multi-national, especially trans-Atlantic cooperation. However, the intersections of education, security and intelligence gathering are far wider. Increasingly, operational concerns of education, security and intelligence meet academically at the interface of education, security and intelligence studies. The most notable development in the US has been the Intelligence Community Centers for Academic Excellence (ICCAE) program. The program provides grants to competitively selected accredited US four-year colleges and universities to support the design and development of intelligence-related curricula. In the UK, the rise of departments or centre for education and research has been less marked but notable.
