ABSTRACT

A sustainable approach is essential when planning and designing landscapes. This requires an understanding of both the biophysical and sociological information as well as the area’s dynamism from various scales. Future landscape developments must be prepared with full cognisance and understanding of the ecosystem to which the landscape belongs. In order to prepare new generations of landscape architect for future challenges, a new educational model is needed. The sustainable landscape architectural design studio course is a part of an undergraduate programme in landscape architecture at Thammasat’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning. This chapter presents the course introduction and structure, the sustainable methods that were introduced in the course, background of the study area, as well as some results of student projects. It highlights the challenges that educators and professionals face including a clear understanding of natural, scientific and cultural perspectives, and how to bring them into future landscape developments in order to strategically promote sustainable solutions.
