ABSTRACT

Higher education institutions in monsoon Asia are reacting to international calls for new approaches to higher education for sustainability (HEfS). This concluding chapter of Education and Sustainability: Paradigms, Policies and Practices in Asia reviews the key findings from earlier chapters. The book presented paradigms, contexts, strategies and outcomes for sustainability education at the national level, from Malaysia, Cambodia, India and Korea. It examined the programmes and strategies adopted at different universities in Thailand and China, and highlighted sustainability education practices and paradigms from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Macau. The conclusion also reviews literature on other Asian countries’ HEfS efforts and examines the diversity of HEfS approaches in monsoon Asia. Different measures and indicators of Asian contexts are considered in relation to HEfS. Comparisons are made between HEfS in monsoon Asia and other parts of the world, including performance on sustainability competences. A programme in Switzerland and course pedagogy from California are compared to Asian programmes and pedagogies discussed in the book. A framework for understanding HEfS in Asia is advanced, and suggestions and goals for future work are put forward.
