ABSTRACT

Natural resource depletion, global warming, and climate change have all now come to the forefront of development agendas across the globe. There is a growing consensus at all levels that environmental sustainability should be given top priority in the future development agenda. As a small developing country in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is highly vulnerable to the adverse effects of global warming and climate change. Recognizing this, Cambodia is committed to making sustainability an integral part of its development agenda. This is articulated in Cambodia’s Country Report for the 2012 Earth Summit. The Green Growth Roadmap, the National Policy and Strategic Plan on Green Growth, and Green Growth Master Plan that is being developed to operationalize the Green Growth Roadmap will integrate sustainability in the country’s development plans and policies. The named programs are expected to align all the relevant ministries, development partners, academia, and civil society more generally to cooperate in addressing the challenges of sustainability. This chapter examines the extent to which sustainability is at present incorporated in Cambodia’s higher education system and identifies the constraints that need to be addressed in the future. The chapter’s focus is mostly on the universities – the key institutions in the country’s education system.
