ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the inclusion of sustainability aspects in all levels of the Education System in India. These aspects are imparted through both formal and non-formal programmes at various levels, viz., primary, secondary and tertiary (higher) education. The Central Government and all State Governments in India have a Ministry or Department of Environment as well as Ministry of Education. Education Ministries/Departments recognize environmental education (EE) as an essential part of education. The chapter focuses on the depth and seriousness with which EE is imparted in India and its impacts on communities; the linkages between the contents of curriculum and their practical application; motivation and interest of faculty and students; and assimilation and use of knowledge by the learners. It suggests that although EE has been introduced in India long ago, desired results have not been achieved as yet. Concerted efforts are required in pedagogical and practical applications of learnings from EE to help achieve sustainable development in India.
