ABSTRACT

This study introduces the history and status of sustainability education in Korea, focusing on social science education at the college level. First, the study reviews how ‘sustainability education’ is understood, and what its relationship is with the more general concept of ‘education for sustainable development,’ suggested by the Brundtland Report (1987). Second, the study reviews various sustainability education programs in Korea. Liberal arts courses on sustainability provided by major universities are reviewed. Their pedagogical goals and main contents are investigated. There are several special undergraduate or graduate level programs on sustainability, and those are reviewed in detail. Sustainability education programs installed by public or private companies are also reviewed. Finally, as a case study, all the related classes provided by the academic units of Seoul National University are introduced and classified. Third, the Korean government’s policies and supports for sustainability education are introduced and their achievements are evaluated.
