ABSTRACT

This theme reports on a review of education for sustainability (EfS) at the undergraduate level in Chinese universities. The authors introduce the course structure at Renmin University as a case study of environmental education, in which EfS is embedded. Subsequently, EfS at Renmin University is analyzed for features, including contemporary issues and policy directives, cognitive learning, and internet-based learning. EfS is appropriate not only for students majoring in environmental disciplines to go deeper into some themes, but also for all as a general course to understand basic sustainability issues. Although progress can be seen, practitioners are facing more challenges. There is a further need for EfS to go beyond individual attempts, and move to more research and collaborative efforts.
