ABSTRACT

The French philosopher Emmanuel Housset (1960) ranks himself in the order of this tradition of phenomenological personalism. At the same time, however, he is its fervent critic, and wants to make a postmodern move beyond. Being a person is not having a relational essence, but is an event, a venture, an exodus, an exile. This chapter introduces Housset’s concept of person (‘the self as exile’), as developed in his L’ intériorité d’exil. Le soi au risque de l’altérité.
