ABSTRACT

Creating gifts and objects of significance for patients’ loved ones. These may be done in the presence of the loved one or separately with the art therapist. If items are to be passed on only after the death of the patient, the art therapist has the responsibility of contacting the family member(s) involved. Art images can become powerful tools of communication between family members and the patient. The symbolic meaning behind the artwork can open up conversations which may sometimes be awkward to initiate, such as expressing love, forgiveness and appreciation to each other. Art therapy in a palliative care setting is a valuable tool in helping children explore their thoughts and feelings before the death of a loved one. The provision of art materials creates an environment that shifts the focus away from the patient to the child.
