ABSTRACT
Men and women use text messaging, email, websites, and social media platforms to perpetrate abuse toward their romantic partners. These acts can range from swearing and insulting or calling a partner names, to more severe acts such as publicly humiliating one’s partner, making threats, or sexual coercion. People also use information and communication technologies such as location sharing applications to monitor, stalk, and pursue current and former romantic partners. This chapter summarizes research conducted in the United States regarding the prevalence and methods with which various cyber forms of abuse and cyberstalking occur in the context of romantic relationships. Correlates of cyber abuse and cyberstalking within the context of romantic relationships are also discussed. This chapter also provides suggestions for victims of cyber abuse as well as cyber abuse prevention strategies. Finally, suggested directions for future research are included.
