ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the longitudinal case study approach demonstrated the omnipresence of elite sport's precariousness and the diverse ways of life the context creates. It offers one possible way to think about athletes' learning in elite sport and that further ‘playing with theory’ is necessary to advance understanding of elite athletes' learning. The book focuses on athlete learning as self-development and the case study materials create important counter-stories that challenge underlying assumptions about elite sport and learning and raise important critical questions about elite sport landscape and practices. The commodity orientation directs elite sport research, systems, and practice towards questions of prediction, effectiveness, and productivity. The book deals with ways forward to think about, research, and influence athletes' learning in elite sport.
