ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of a Nathan. Nathan's story begins as a child learning to skate and continues through the process of becoming a semi-professional player. The sport of ice hockey is often referred to as Canada's national sport and pastime, playing a significant role in Canadian society. Families can be found hovering around the television on a Saturday night watching professional hockey games, and when Canadians play in the Olympics or World Championships, all other activities of daily life seem to stop. For many Canadian children, their introduction to ice skating and hockey occurs in neighbourhood community or home-made backyard ice rinks. Academic success remained a high priority for Nathan, but he found it difficult to keep up with his schoolwork given his hockey schedule, and he was disappointed in his grades, which he perceived to be incongruent with his academic abilities and potential.
