ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the volume and provides an introduction to the rationale behind this project. The chapter looks at the characteristics of the disputes and surveys recent developments before providing an overview of the difficulties that the Senkaku/Diaoyu dispute and Dokdo/Takeshima dispute present in Japan’s relations with China and Korea respectively. It alludes to the different arguments put forth in the various chapters and contextualises them against the larger theme of fostering better relations between Japan and her two closest neighbours – China and Korea.
