ABSTRACT

The logic lectures were held next door in the Philosophy Department and the lecturer patiently explained the basics of the propositional calculus with parallel proofs by truth table analysis and inference rules. The sceptic would argue against the evidence that climate change is the result of human activity and hence assign a low probability to this statement. The suppositional conditional, as described in this theory, is indeed a good deal more than the probability conditional. A key influence on the development of the suppositional theory of conditionals was the Ramsey test which links with the T3 family of conditionals. The suppositional theory is a psychological account which fleshes out the Ramsey test in more detail. The conditional is suppositional because the linguistic and psychological purpose of ‘if’ is to trigger a process of hypothetical thinking in which p is supposed and q is evaluated in line with the Ramsey test.
