ABSTRACT
How do social movements for political reform assert alternatives within the existing urban development trajectory? What are social and spatial aspects of those alternatives? The chapter relies on years of research and four cases of most recent alternative development projects in Jakarta. Central in the search of contemporary alternative development theory and concept is community empowerment in the reconfiguration of urban politics and the capacity to negotiate neighbourhood spaces in reshaping the city.
