ABSTRACT
Debbie Tucker Green and Alice Birch have both attracted much critical attention, received prestigious awards for their work, and have seen their plays performed on national and international stages. The most high-profile production of a tucker green play on a European stage to date is Benedict Andrews’ stoning mary for Berlin’s Schaubühne (2007) translated by Anja Hilling. The production was preceded by a rehearsed reading of trade and stoning mary a few weeks earlier as part of the theatre’s international festival. German reviewers were generally critical of Tscharyiski’s approach, often arguing that her cartoon-aesthetic flattens the characters, but read Revolt. She Said in a more positive light than Mar-a-Lago; Barbara Behrendt argued that Tscharyiski’s choices were much better suited to Birch’s text enhancing its humour; she specifically labels the piece as a ‘guide to feminist uprising’ and ‘an angry feminist text’.
