ABSTRACT

[Abstract: This chapter explores how the whole range of young children’s needs should be met in a world characterized by diversity, change, and uncertainty. Such an approach involves emphasis on children’s long-term well-being, what in the UK is called spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development and qualities and dispositions such as resilience and empathy. This requires caring relationships in inclusive, hospitable environments, where all children have a sense of agency and belonging and adults draw on children’s existing “funds of knowledge” and offer broad, enjoyable, and meaningful opportunities. Many current practices and assumptions about knowledge, ability, and success are questioned.]
