ABSTRACT

Metaphysical explanation is the key notion of explanation relevant to metametaphysics. In this chapter, I distinguish different things we might mean by the term ‘metaphysical explanation’, discuss metaphysical explanation in contrast to the more familiar notion of scientific explanation, and motivate the view that the two are to be distinguished. There is little consensus on what is the best way to model metaphysical explanations, but I present the most prominent alternatives. I end with a discussion of realism and anti-realism about metaphysical explanation.
