ABSTRACT

Publications applying the Kantian concept of dignity to plants usually have to face harsh criticism. In particular in countries where the notion of dignity plays no central role in public discussions, the idea of a ‘dignity of plants’ causes astonishment or even concerns regarding its implications on scientific research, plant breeding, agriculture and biotechnology. In giving a short overview on the background, beginning and progress of the debate on the ‘dignity of plants’ this chapter addresses especially non-German speaking readers, who are interested in this distinctive feature of plant ethics.
