ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the doctrine of the Raza de la Hispanidad (Hispanic race), which was integrated into the official ideology of Spain’s fascist party, the Falange, in the 1930s. It first clarifies the extent to which the Spanish fascists saw this doctrine as compatible with the Nazi “New Order” and subsequently considers the role they foresaw for Spain within this coming order. It also investigates the effect of the Falangist Hispanidad discourse at the policy level in the early years of Franco’s rule. Finally, it concludes with some reflections on the racist connotations of Hispanidad, its use by the Spanish fascists, and their links with National Socialism.
